About Trees
Trees are vital to our existence. They provide oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil, and provide life to the world’s fauna, as the largest plants on the earth. They also provide us with tools and shelter materials.
Trees are not only necessary for life, but they also serve as a link between the past, present, and future as the longest-living species on the planet.
Woodlands, rainforests, and trees in urban settings, such as parks, must be protected and managed responsibly all around the world.
The trees planted for this event are planted through Play It Green’s partnership with Eden Reforestation and will be planted at three sites in Madagascar.
Planting Sites
We plant our trees across three sites in northern Madagascar, a nation which has sadly been in the news lately as climate change is causing issues for the people in the south of the Island. Climate change impacts upon everyone however it is the poorest and most vulnerable people it affects the most.
Benefits of tree planting in Madagascar
More than 90% of Madagascar’s primary forests are destroyed, impacting people living in extreme poverty the most.
Because of its rare species and high rates of habitat loss, Madagascar is one of the world’s top biodiversity conservation priorities. Mudflats have washed into the ocean as a result of the destruction of mangrove estuaries along the coast, devastating once-productive fisheries and increasing the vulnerability of coastal populations to storms, tsunamis, and floods. Deforestation threatens one of the world’s rarest and most diverse forest systems in the dry deciduous woods.
Replacing Trees has the following benefits:
– Soil erosion stops
– Flooding stops
– Better soil
– Better fishing & farming
– Rainfall patterns return
– Animals return to habitat
– Trees absorb CO2
Planting with Play It Green also supports at least 11 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Employ To Plant
We work with Eden because they use an employ to plant methodology.
By putting the local community at the centre of the reforestation effort, it inspires a sense of ownership and a greater commitment to protecting their forests long-term.
In fact, Madagascar is one of their most prolific reforestation and poverty alleviation project nations, now on their second generation of farmers who tend to, as well as, plant the trees. They have also been able to develop extensive infrastructure such as guardhouses, fire towers, seed banks, and a training centre for local nursery managers to gain hands-on experience in seedling management and effective reforestation techniques.
Through this employ-to-plant method, the success of the reforestation efforts and the communities’ economic success are inextricably linked, so you know, when you plant with Play it Green, you’re making a difference that extends far beyond the environment.
